Project Title: Aboard
Completed, October 2024
Budget: $31,000
Location: Vermilion, OH

Aboard features a series of three benches being created for the city of Vermilion, OH and Public Art Vermilion. In this project, each bench takes the form of a sail, one for each sail of the schooner boat once built on the site of the sculpture. This design was informed through community discussions on representing the pride of the city and its relation to Lake Erie. This project is being designed, engineered, and fabricated in my studio in Cleveland, OH.

Aboard was constructed of rolled 3/16” thick Corten steel. Corten is a type of weathering steel that is designed to corrode as it is exposed to weather. The corrosion that forms on the surface creates a protective layer that provides long-term durability for outdoor projects. Additional materials used for this project include repurposed cedar boards and stainless steel. As these materials age, the colors in the project will shift from the gray steel and yellow wood to soft oranges and reds on the sails, and a light gray for the benches. This weathering process typically takes 1-2 years for full effect.
