Incoherent Spaces
Memory is an interesting thing. It allows us to see the past. Places we’ve been, people we’ve seen, things we’ve done. But it’s not perfect. We can’t remember everything. Some things get lost, they disappear, they are forgotten. So we recall what we can, the faces of people we love, our favorite places to hang out, particularly emotional moments. As our memories begin to age, get lost, and then forgotten, relics of our past, bits and pieces of what we once knew still remain. These relics endure as segments, small sections of our original memory, filled in by voids of space that are often confused, blurry, and indistinct.
By digging deep into the trenches of my memories I have recalled specific architectural details of places I’ve been and structures I’ve seen. They are recollections from childhood trips, buildings that passed by while I traveled by car. However, these memories are incomplete. This body of work seeks to complete the composition of these memories, using the architectural details I remember and filling in the incomplete often-disjointed spaces with the patterning that clouds my subconscious.
When approaching a new piece I look at the sheets of transparent glass in a painterly manner, as if each one is a blank canvas that can be used to investigate non-traditional ways to apply glass materials. The imagery in each piece is developed through a process that includes digital rendering, painting, drawing, silk-screening, sandblasting, and engraving onto a sheet of glass. The transparency of the glass allows me to stack images and shapes to create texture and depth. By layering images I can build landscapes where the foreground and background are often switched to alter the perspective of each. The final step of fusing a sheet of copper and enamel provides a backdrop for the layered images similar to that of a painted canvas. When finished, my pieces expose painterly qualities more commonly seen in contemporary fine art than in the traditional glass craft, forcing the viewer to question what the piece is made out of and how the materials were manipulated.
